The Friendship I Ruined Without Saying a Single Word

I was scrolling Instagram before sleep, as usual, when I found a Minecraft reel. Just normal gameplay, someone walking around a village, mining, opening chests. But the text on top was not about Minecraft. It said something like “one of the things I hate most about myself is that my brain takes a friendship and turns it into something else, and after a while I don’t even know the difference anymore, while the other person had no idea”.

I stopped scrolling. Because I have been there.

I had a close friend. Talking to her was easy. We could chat about anything, send random stuff at 1 AM, and it was never awkward. It was comfortable. And that comfort was the start of the problem.

Because slowly, without me realizing it, my feelings changed. There was no specific moment. One day I noticed I was rereading our chats. Then I noticed I kept checking if she was online. Then when she told stories about other guys, someone funny she met, someone who helped her, I felt annoyed for no valid reason.

And that reel was right. At some point I really could not tell the difference anymore. Was I happy when she messaged me because she was my friend, or because I liked her? Was I helping her because I cared as a friend, or because I wanted to be the person she depended on? I honestly did not know.

Meanwhile she had no idea. She was just being a normal friend, treating me the same as always. I was the one giving extra meaning to everything she did.

After that, I could not act normal anymore. Every reply I typed, I thought about it first. Is this too much? Is this too obvious? Chats that used to be easy became something I had to think about. Sometimes I even delayed replying on purpose so I would not look too eager. Which is funny, because before all this I would reply in a seconds and it was fine.

She noticed I became weird. Of course she did. Sometimes distant, sometimes too intense. And I could not explain why without confessing, so I explained nothing. The friendship just got quieter and quieter until it faded on its own.

The honest truth is, she did not ruin anything. I did. Not because I did something bad to her, but because I wanted the friendship to be more than it was, and at the same time I was too scared to say it or to let it go. I wanted two things at once and got neither.

Looking back, maybe I should have just confessed. Getting rejected hurts, but at least it is a clear answer, and you can move on from a clear answer. What I did instead, keeping it all inside, only made me lose a friend slowly without any closure.

So yeah, a random Minecraft reel with 548 views made me think about all of this at night. Someone was just playing Minecraft while describing exactly how I lost one of my favorite people.

If any of you are in that position right now, liking your own friend, I do not have a wise answer. I only have this, pick one. Say it, or accept the friendship as it is. The one option that does not work is the one I chose, staying in the middle and acting weird while calling it protecting the friendship. It does not protect anything. It just makes you lose the person slower.
