Lately I realized that I spend most of my life living for later. Savings for later, learning for later, working for later, even collecting experiences for later. Almost everything I do is aimed at some version of me that does not exist yet. And slowly a strange question started to form in my head. If I am always preparing for the future, what happens to today? Does it ever get to be anything more than a waiting room?
There is nothing wrong with planning, of course. Saving money, building skills, thinking ahead, these are good and responsible things. I am grateful I have the kind of mind that thinks about tomorrow. But somewhere along the way, preparing for the future stopped being a part of my life and quietly became the whole point of it. Every present moment got turned into a stepping stone toward a moment that has not arrived yet.
And that is the trap I did not notice at first. When everything is for later, today never really gets to be lived. It only gets to be used. I study not to enjoy learning, but so the future me can benefit. I work not to be present in the work, but so the future me can rest. I delay rest, delay joy, delay presence, all with the quiet promise that one day, when everything is ready, I will finally start living. But that day keeps moving further away.
The uncomfortable truth is that the future is not a place I will ever actually arrive at. When I reach the thing I was preparing for, I do not stop and live, I just start preparing for the next thing. The goalpost moves. The someday never turns into today. And if I am not careful, I could spend my entire life getting ready to live, without ever giving myself permission to actually do it.
I think part of this comes from fear. Preparing feels safe. As long as I am getting ready, I can tell myself I am doing the right thing, that the real reward is still coming. Being present is scarier, because it asks me to accept that this ordinary, unfinished moment is already my life, not a rehearsal for it. There is no dramatic arrival waiting at the end, just a long series of todays that I either lived or spent waiting.
So I keep asking myself whether I have gotten the balance wrong. Whether I have been so busy saving experiences for later that I forgot to have any now. Whether in protecting the future, I have been quietly neglecting the only time I actually have, which is this one. The future is important, but it is also a place I can never touch. The present is the only thing I ever truly hold.
So lately I am trying to pull myself back a little closer to today. To still plan, but not to live entirely inside the plan. To let some moments exist just for themselves, not as preparation for anything. Because a life spent only getting ready is still a life spent, and I would rather not reach the future I worked so hard for only to realize I was never really there for the days that led me to it.
