Dating and Marriage Are Not the Same Thing

I am not married yet, so I want to be honest from the start. This is not me talking from experience, this is me thinking out loud about something I have been trying to understand. For a long time I assumed marriage was just dating with a longer contract. Same two people, same feelings, only now with rings and a certificate. But the more I watch the people around me, and the more I think about it, the more I doubt that idea. Dating and marriage do not look like two levels of the same game to me. They look like two different games with different rules.

From what I can see, dating is mostly about feelings. It is about wanting to feel wanted, the excitement, the texting late at night, the small jealousy that somehow feels like proof that you care. And there is always an exit door in the room. If something does not feel right, you can step back without breaking anything permanent. That part I understand, because that is the part I have actually lived.

Marriage seems to work differently. From the outside it looks less about how you feel on a good day and more about what you do on a bad one. The feelings still matter, but they stop being the whole point. When the excitement fades, and people keep telling me it always fades, dating lets you walk away and look for that feeling somewhere else. Marriage seems to ask you to stay and keep building even when the spark goes quiet. That is the part I am still trying to wrap my head around.

When I date, I am mostly responsible for myself. My time, my money, my decisions, my future. If I want to change jobs, move, or spend my savings on something stupid, that is my business. Marriage looks like the end of that kind of “my”. Every decision seems to come with a second person attached to it. What you do with your money, your health, your mood, even your silence, it all lands on someone else. That looks like a heavier kind of love, and honestly a scarier one.

Dating rewards the best version of a person. We show up clean, calm, and interesting. We hide the boring parts, the messy parts, the tired and irritated parts that are not lovable at all. Marriage, from what I can tell, sees all of it. It sees you in the morning with no energy, you when you are stressed about money, you when you are wrong and too proud to admit it. It looks like being fully seen and choosing to stay anyway, from both sides. I do not know yet if I am ready for that, but I want to be one day.

I used to think love was the hard part and marriage was the reward. Lately I suspect it is the opposite. Falling in love is easy, almost automatic. Staying, forgiving, adjusting, growing in the same direction as another person for years, that sounds like the actual work. Dating feels like the trailer. Marriage sounds like the whole movie, including the slow parts.

Thinking this way does not make me afraid of marriage. If anything it makes me respect it more before I ever get there. I do not want to walk into it assuming it is just a fancier version of dating, because I do not think it is. It looks like a decision to keep choosing someone long after the easy feelings run out. Dating asks, do I like how this feels right now. Marriage seems to ask, am I willing to stay when it does not feel like anything at all.

Maybe that is the real difference, at least from where I am standing right now. Dating is about finding someone I enjoy. Marriage is about becoming someone worth staying with. I have not lived it yet, but I would rather try to understand it before, than learn it the hard way after.

And here is the funniest part. After all this deep thinking about the difference between dating and marriage, I actually have a plan. I want to be married in about three years. Very confident, very specific, very sure of the timeline. There is just one small detail missing. I have no idea who the other person is. None. Not a name, not a face, not even a candidate. So here I am, writing a whole philosophy about marriage like some kind of expert, while the bride is currently a complete mystery, possibly still not knowing I exist. If that is not comedy, I do not know what is. But hey, at least when she finally shows up, the theory will be ready. Now I just need the person.

And if marriage turns out not to be for me after all, no problem, I already have a plan B. I am simply going to become the cool uncle. The one who shows up with the best gifts, tells the wildest stories, spoils the kids rotten, and then hands them back to their parents when the crying starts. Honestly, when I think about it that way, plan B does not sound so bad either. Hehe.
