Life Changed Many Things, Including the Way I See Myself

When I look at who I am now and compare it to who I was a few years ago, it feels like looking at two different people. It is not just about age or appearance. What changed runs deeper than that. Life slowly changed many things inside me, and the one I feel the most is the way I see myself.

The way I think has changed. I used to see a lot of things in black and white. Right or wrong, good or bad, with nothing in between. Now I know life is full of gray areas. There is a reason behind things I used to judge instantly. There is a story behind the people I was quick to label. The more I go through, the more I realize how little I actually understood back then.

The way I love has changed too. I used to think loving someone meant giving as much as possible until I lost myself in it. Now I understand that healthy love does not mean erasing yourself. I learned that I can care without losing my boundaries, that I can love someone without hurting myself in the process.

The way I trust has changed as well. There was a time I trusted people very easily, and a time I became too careful because I had been let down before. Now I try to stay somewhere in the middle. I still open my heart, but I no longer hand over everything all at once. Trust is no longer something I give away for free, but something that grows slowly over time.

But out of all of it, the thing that changed the most is the way I forgive myself. I used to be so hard on myself. I remembered every mistake for a long time, replayed it in my head, used it as proof that I was not good enough. Now I am learning to be a little gentler. I still take responsibility for my mistakes, but I stopped punishing myself with no end. I realized I am also a human being who is still learning, and someone who is still learning is bound to fall a few times.

None of these changes came from pleasant things. Most of them actually came from disappointment, from failure, from heavy nights. But strangely, I am grateful for them. Because without all of that, I might still be the old version of myself, the one who judged too quickly and forgave too slowly.

I do not know what else I will turn into going forward. Life will surely keep teaching me many things, and surely not all of them will be gentle. But if everything I go through makes me a little more understanding, a little calmer, and a little more at peace with myself, then maybe that is how life shapes us. Not by making us perfect, but by making us more honest about who we really are.
